MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Volunteerism and Fundraising

Volunteerism and fundraising are the two foundational pillars for Trout Unlimited. Without grassroots volunteerism and fundraising Trout Unlimited would not be where it is today - this country’s leader in cold water conservation.

Following our national charter, we as a chapter are leading the way to conserve, protect, and restore the Big Flatbrook River. These are very exciting times for our Chapter. We have the opportunity to make the Big Flatbrook River become a healthier river, suffer from less erosion, and support more trout. But we cannot do it without your help. We need both your time and your money. The project will be both labor intensive and costly.

We have received the preliminary survey and design plan
From Urbani Fisheries. Vice President Brian Cowden will present and explain the survey and design plan at the September 2010 chapter meeting. If you have any questions about what we are proposing to do, you must attend this meeting and ask questions. This is your opportunity to learn how we are going to make the Big Flatbrook a healthier river.

We also need your man hours. Starting September 25, 2010 we will conduct a riparian tree planting at Three Bridges. We also hope to install two kiosks, one at Three Bridges and one at Roy Bridge. We will need some of your muscles as the kiosks are designed to be sturdy, but weighty!.

Chapter Member John Nordstedt will be building the two Kiosks. We will use the kiosks to educate the fishing public about our Big Flatbrook Project. We will also share the kiosks with the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.

In addition to your muscle we need your $$money$$. We have established a dedicated fund for the Big Flatbrook project. We have opened the fund with a $4,000 grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and we have received many individual donations on top of that! So please help us by sending in your tax deductable donation for the Big Flatbrook project to our treasurer Ken McDonald 16 Kirkbride Terrace, Towaco, NJ 07082.

The Board is also putting together a fundraising plan to raise funds for the Big Flatbrook Project. Please contact any Board Member/Officer if you would like to help with fundraising. We estimate the project to cost between $35,000 and $50,000 depending on what we want to do and how we want to do it.

We will be float stocking the proposed TCA section in the fall. We have a Boy Scout Troop Eagle Scout project building two float boxes for us! If you are interested in participating in float stocking, please let me know!

Again, your time and money are invaluable to this project!

Tightlines,

 Dave King, President

Casting for Recovery:

As many of you know, I volunteer for Casting for Recovery as a Fly Fishing Instructor.  The Northern Retreat is being held in Red Bank from August 27 - August 29.  On Sunday August 29 we need River Helper volunteers.  River Helpers are paired with a female participant.  River Helpers help their paired woman fly fish for the morning.  We will be fishing in Holmdel Park, near Red Bank. It is an extremely rewarding experience.

If you are interested in volunteering please email me at sbreed@optonline.net.

Thank you.

Susan B. Reed

Flat Brook YRTCA:

Pat Bergamo reported that the Sussex County Federation of Sportmen voted to support the Flat Brook YRTCA.  This much needed endorsement brings us much closer to obtaining approval to open in time for the 2012 season.

TIC News:

WANTED:
NEW TIC COORDINATOR

As some of you may have already heard, our TIC Coordinator, Doug Riley is moving out of State. Doug, we will miss you terribly!

This leaves us in a pinch as we need to replace Doug as our TIC Coordinator. If you are interested in coordinating TIC programs for our Chapter, please call Dave King at (973) 222-2114.

The TIC coordinator works with Jessica Griglak of the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. Jessica Griglak runs the TIC program for the State of New Jersey and coordinates with each Chapter’s TIC Coordinator.

The TIC program kicks off in September with the delivery of eggs to schools by chapter members, then is followed by the placement of onion sacs in streams to collect invertebrates, an entomology lecture at the school and is concluded by the releasing of the young fish into a local river.

Chapter members are assigned a school for these purposes. The TIC Coordinator simply need to coordinate our chapter volunteers as they are needed.

Chapter member John Nordstedt repairs all broken chillers, which unfortunately happens a lot. The TIC Coordinator also communicates with John when we have a chiller problem.

Float Stocking The Flatbrook:

We have the go ahead to begin Float Stocking in the Fall of 2010.  We need volunteers to make this effort successful.

John Parise will lead the effort and will provide more info at our September meeting.

Stay tuned as this fast developing idea materializes.

Chapter Library:

Thanks to John Nordstedt, Our Chapter Library is operational.  Click here for more details

Chapter Trips:

We are in the process of planing day trips and beginner trips.  We are looking for volunteers to be Trip Leaders and Guides.  This is a great opportunity for our experienced chapter members to teach and educate the joys of fly fishing to the beginner and less experienced members of our chapter.

Chapter Logo Design

We are reaching out to the artist segment of our membership to design a new chapter logo.  The new design will be embroidered on shirts, jackets, hats, etc.  Click Here to see a sample Logo

Please submit your design(s) to David King for considertion.
